The Dubs Scheme, named after Lord Alf Dubs, a former child refugee who used the Kindertransport to flee Nazi-occupied Europe, established a legal framework to bring unaccompanied child refugees to the UK.
The UK Government chose the same day as the first Parliamentary vote to trigger Brexit to announce the scrapping of the scheme.
Having spent the previous five months growing the social audience of Refugees Welcome, we quickly went into gear to mobilise tens of thousands online, including receiving celebrity support.
In 48 hours, our petition received 50,000 signatures with many newspapers leading with the story the day after Parliament backed Brexit, proving that the Government couldn’t just bury the bad news.
We generated more than 56,000 new sign-ups and raised more than £60,000 to keep Refugees Welcome going as they campaign for the reintroduction of the Dubs Scheme.
